Just been reading old Broons from the reprint books..
and it gave me a double take
the baby..Bairn was playing in the oven while it was cooking on top..she was playing house!! all the guys were in charge while the ladies were out..the Bairn says phew! its hot.. the sauce pan was bubbling over nearly on to her!!
any other black humour which you can't help laughing at..which its a relief its only a comic and not real life..
It's Dare-a-Day Davy, drawn by Ken Reid for Pow, but though the strip was usually quite grotesque, this particular instalment was considered too gruesome and not published in the comic.
I don't know if there's a higher resolution copy anywhere. It was originally published in a 1969 fanzine: Weird Fantasy issue one.
I remember reading one The Three Bears story by Mike Pearse where Pa came up with a plan to break into Hank's Megastore by rolling a boulder down a hill into the side of the store. The plan went wrong when the boulder went off the line Pa had drawn in the ground for it to go down, and rebounded off some electricity pylons, flying straight back towards the bears.
Pa then thought he was done for, but the boulder narrowly missed him. He then went off to tell Ma and Ted about his lucky escape, but they'd been flattened.

Just about everything Ken Reid did in the 60s for Odhams was dark black comedy - the Nerves in particular had some amazing pieces of art that would never be allowed now (darn PC brigade) with fatty's stomach exploding from eating to much, his entire body system ceasing up form eating to much fat, swallowing a X-mas tree etc - also his Dare a Day Dave strips had Davey mutilated in so many ways ending up in hospital on drips after when in a car he crashes into an overhead bridge, another he falls into a ships funnel and explodes, drowns in paint, is strangled by sausages, attacked by hatchets, flattened by a steamroller etc then there's Kens Frankie Stein strip...... and you can guess they are all funny and stunningly drawn.

It's been said a zillion times, but it would so great if we had a reprint book of all his Odhams strips. I'd buy a copy for every kid I know as a Christmas present!

The block went on The Nervs wayyy before "political correctness". As soon as IPC took the reigns in 1969 they dropped it and told editors it wasn't to be reprinted in their comics (Whizzer & Chips, Buster, etc). As far as I know it has never been reprinted to this day. Shame. It would be perfect for Toxic (but unfortunately Egmont don't own the rights to pre-1969 strips anyway).
Yeah that's right Lew I forgot about that - but for Odhams he was allowed free reign wasn't he ? - I was only kidding re the" PC Brigade" I know thats a "red rag to a bull" for some folk - Yeah The Nerves would be good in a mag like Toxic I still think Reid's Frankie Stein strips have a place somewhere - class is class.
