Identify the artist!

Post by Shaqui »

Can anyone identify this artist? I know the style - I'm sure he drew lots of strips for Fleetway annuals and specials ( a 'Timequake' strip springs to mind) and also some 'Battle of the Planets' for TV Comic, but I've never found a credit to put a name to him...

Thanks in advance.

Definitely Ron Tiner - here's an episode of "The House on Witch Hill" from Suzy comic no 11 dated 20th November 1982, for comparison.
Sorry, I tried to upload a scan, but it hasn't worked (yet again!).

Apparently the files are too big. How do you put scans on here? I followed the upload attachments note, but without success. I'll try again.

On Tinypic you can choose your scan to be presented for "forums" (or messageboards) in the drop down resize options box. It is a smaller image but still readable.

Holy crud! Thanks guys - I've even corresponded with Ron Tiner in the past about his short lived stint for Look-in (on the 'Bionic Action' strip) and even have his book 'Drawing Without A Figure'. I should have recognised his style. I must be getting old... :?

I think I've done it.

No I haven't! I've got the scans on tinypic, but how do you get them from there to here?

Is there an easier way to upload scans on the site? I can do this on facebook etc, but I can never put any on my scans onto the site directly - I still also want to put the Patty's World in colour up, but I just can't do it!

You highlight the code that appears in the box on tinypic and then copy and paste it here.

I didn't draw the Match Weekly football strip "Cannon" for the first eight episodes. That was Steve McGarry. He referenced all his drawings from the "Fairburn System of Visual Reference" (a series of photobooks that were supposed to provide reference for artists) so it was easy for me to pick up on the look of those early characters from the start of my stint. I did the art chores on that strip for about two years, with a short six-week "holiday" to have pneumonia!!
The premise for the series was:- we invented a fictional team and placed them in the third division, "playing" them against real teams every week. I had to be sent a set of portrait photographs each week to get the likenesses of the players so that I could do action shots of them playing against our imaginary team..
I still have most of the original artwork, so if anyone wants to buy a page....? A few of the pages were bought by clubs who had been featured in the story, but I still have most of them - about 200 sheets nearly A2 in size.
The three pictures at the top of this topic I did before I started full-time work in comics. In fact I didn't recognise them at first, it was so long ago.

The illustrations at top are from the K9 Annual published by World Distributors in late 1982, so would have been drawn late 1981/early 1982.

At what point did you become a full time comic artist, Ron? I know you were doing some comic material, like 'Look-in', for IPC/Fleetway as mentioned ('2000AD' and 'Starlord' annuals and specials), and also for 'TV Comic' (Polystyle) in the late 1970s?
