Moebius RIP

It's being reported that Jean Giraud (aka 'Moebius'), whose Lieutenant Blueberry strip appeared in Valiant for a time during the 1960s, passed away this morning. Though he's better known for work published in continental Europe and the US he was one of the few unquestionable giants produced by the comics.

I definitely recognize the name Phil, was he best known for science-fiction works?

As one of the founders of Metal Hurlant (later published in the US as Heavy Metal Magazine) Moebius was the name Giraud used for his fantasy and Science Fiction work, though he signed his hugely popular Western strips as 'Gir'.

He certainly created more than his fair share of them. The Incal, The Airtight Garage...

I first came across his work in Cheval Noir, the Dark Horse monthly anthology. It was amazing. Another giant gone from our midst.

It's rather depressing how many comics creators are shuffling off this mortal coil.
Because of an interest in European comics, I've always been aware of his work and, although it didn't appeal to enough to collect, I have read a fair bit of it and it is powerful, strong, well crafted material. Yes, I think he was a giant of the comics world.

Very sad 73 is not that old nowadays - he was without doubt a pioneering comic book creator (and a movie concept artist as well ) whilst his books were not always to my taste they were always interesting and stunningly illustrated - I always associate him (and Corben) with Heavy Metal / Hurlant) I even liked his Silver Surfer art in the mini series "Parable"
