Looked for the Beano in Tesco, Surrey Quays today and they had 31st March and 7th April editions on sale. Also notice they have finally started phasing out their Value range products in those garish blue and white stripes (which stand out a mile at the checkout thus exposing us cheapskates to public scorn). They still exist but have much nicer packaging and are called Everyday Value - or something. Four chicken and Veg pies for 84p can't be bad - and they cannot be faulted for quality, had two on Saturday. Apologies for digressing.

WOW I'm really surprised "boggin'" isn't knows in the South of England, even if its not a general term it is pretty self explanatory and a kid could suss it out no problem

I first heard it in the Beano and had to work out its meaning from the context. I've never heard it in real life.

There are definitely some words which the Beano uses way too often - "Result!", anyone? (Admittedly they seem to have toned down the frequency of that one of late.)

One modern phrase (if you can call it that) which gets my goat - is this penchant for saying "Yeah, no." I would say it originated in the past twelve months and now I hear it almost on a daily basis. Mind you I do have speech radio on all the time at home so that doesn't help.

...In that case I'm pleased to say that - like Waitrose - it doesn't seem to have reached Stoke-on-Trent yet!

The expression reminds me a bit of Clive James's anecdote about a rather pompous American Professor of Literature whose pedantic observation that "the English language provides numerous instances of the 'double negative' but not a single example of a 'double positive'" was suddenly interrupted from the audience with a dismissive utterance of "Yeah! Yeah!"

Digi, read what you're replying to. As CC explained, it's not a mistake because in some areas of the country The Beano is on sale today.

As I understand it, the recall date is the date the retailer is to send any back on sale or return. Change the recall date, and the retailer ought not to be leaving the shelves empty if things are delayed.

You realise that this has probably been going on for decades, but it's only in recent times that the recall date (as opposed to the "off-sale" date still shown on the cover) has been printed on the magazines?

After last week's discussion about the Beano trying to use modern slang, this week Benjy* describes the diving pool as, "Topper!" Hmm. Maybe a little too far in the other direction?

Yeah, I noticed that. If a classic DCT comic is named after a word, that word isn't cool in modern speech. People don't say Topper these days, unless they're referring to top hats like Lord Snooty wore.

For me, that's one of the biggest problems faced by Dandy comic. As we've mentioned before, the word 'dandy' is hopelessly antiquated. Maybe it's no longer redolent of a kind of...limp-wristed display of ostentation, but it is a twee word that sounds wrong when spoken aloud without irony. This was okay when the name was merely a brand, used to denote the comic and it's characters, but the brand is less recogniseable now, and not strong enough to stand as an abstract.

Beezer is more suitable than Topper as Beezer meant good as in "Beezer wheeze" (good idea).

I see just above the pansy potter retro story this week they mention she is on the cover of the beano annual 2013 lets hope its a nice retro style annual this year with a load of old characters returning in new stories & not just on the cover.
