Phil, as you mentioned in your quote, that the interior characters on the covers are rare, Ive scanned this one of Alona, just in case you have not seen it, although I suspect you may have.

Thanks Matrix - I hadn't seen that before. Although those portrait covers look distinctly old-fashioned today (and, let's face it, decidedly middle-class!) I think they have a special charm that is all their own. What's more the original oil paintings are absolutely spectacular!

Thankyou Steve, I would love to go, unfortunately I have a few things to take into consideration. I could probably get an airfare for about one thousand pounds return from Brisbane, although at short notice it may cost more, then there is the time off work with a bit of jet lag I would need at least say a week off, then probably my biggest problem would be my wife, who lets just say does not have the same passion for comics or original artwork that I do!

"Boo hoo, tell someone who cares", I hear you say. Well you do not know how lucky you are, you can lay in, cost of say a tube fare, take in the sights, pie shop, then spend half the day looking around the fair. Oh well at least its sunny here!

If you do go Steve could you just have a look at the prices for me, and ask him if he could put some on the web. "No", I hear you say, "do it yourself", well thanks a lot Steve!

I can't actually remember how much he was asking for the PT covers, but they were certainly over £100 each. I did see a well-known Marvel inker exchange one for some of his own artwork though.

Thanks Steve, yes mainly the prices at this stage, it was Phils description of them earlier, "absolutely spectacular" that made me think it would be nice to have at least one in my collection.

While on the subject of "Princess Tina". I now have some from 1967 and have to say for myself it has been a hidden gem, with some great strips, the title to me seems a bit misleading, as some of the strips could almost have been for boys and girls.

What year do some feel is the strongest for Princess Tina?

I would guess a strongest year for Princess Tina (judging from the annuals), would be circa 1971-72: a winning line-up consisting of Alona - The Wild One, Jane Bond, Sue Day, Chairman Cherry & new recruit Patty's World.

Strongly written well-drawn strips.

I must admit that it was the technique that impressed me most about those pieces. Not having used oils before I was blown away by the smoothness and precision of the paintwork when compared to the printed covers - it really made me want to experiment with some portraits of my own.

Having said that I'm not sure I'd want to hang one on the wall - the subject matter is a bit too old fashioned, and without the logo it wouldn't obviously have anything to do with comics.

I agree some look a little dated, but there are some (not that I have seen that many) that would not look out of place today. I was thinking they might be a nice present for my daughters, something a bit different, the examples I was thinking of are from 1967 that have animals on them, there's one with a koala, and another with a parrot, as my daughters love animals.

Here is the Koala cover, a nice example that would fit in well here, especially as we have Koalas just down the road from where we live.
