Re: What comics did you buy today?
Today I bought:
The Beano #3669
Simpsons Comics Spectacular TPB (£2.50 from a charity shop)
The Simpsons Annual 2010 (£1.50 from a different charity shop)
Simpsons Comics Spring bundle (contains an issue each of Simpsons Comics, Futurama Comics and The Best of Simpsons Comics, £4.99 from WHSmith, would've cost £10.23 separately a few months ago)

The latest Beano.
This seems to becoming a habit now that the printed Dandy is no longer around.

Zarjaz 12 - a fanzine with strips (like Spaceship Away). I have never read before and have ordered it off their website.
PS: Just read that Zarjaz was up for favourite British black and white comic - Viz won.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
I have issue 0 of Zarjaz somewhere, from back in 2005/6. I've got a few later ones too, they do some great twists on 2000AD tales, Sam Slade in 1889, or Judge Dredd as a Victorian Bobby, for instance.
I wanted to do a strip for them featuring Vogel & Perks Esquire, the 18th century Gunsharks used as a throwaway gag in Sinister Dexter, once.
Anyway. Today I went searching for issue 55 of The Phoenix, because their subscription service have screwed up (again). But the Waitrose's I went in have already put number 56 out. I bought that, just in case!
Also I got The Fifth Form at St Dominic's, which is a book-form reprint of an early Boys' Own Paper serial.

Sounds like you'll have to order 55 as a back issue then.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Adventure comic no. 24, from February 1922, featuring Non-Stop Ned, the daring motorist, from a year when presumably motoring was still a bit of a novelty. Came with the free gift, a photo card of West Ham footballer Syd Puddefoot, who scored seven goals in one match against Crystal Palace in 1918. Adventure was the first of DCT's big five, so this is truly a historic comic!
Re: What comics did you buy today?
You may be interested to learn, babington, that the same photograph of Syd Puddefoot was given away again six weeks later, in the version of Adventure that was issued north of the border, the only difference being that the comments on the reverse referred to Falkirk because he had just been transferred to that club. As they hadn't had time to obtain a photo of him in Falkirk's kit, they simply used the West Ham one. His decision to move might have had something to do with the fact that West Ham were in the Second Division at the time. His skills were very much in demand, and he moved south again in 1924 when he signed for Blackburn Rovers, and was to get an FA Cup winners medal in 1928 when Rovers beat the then mighty Huddersfield Town 3-1.babington wrote:Adventure comic no. 24, from February 1922, featuring Non-Stop Ned, the daring motorist, from a year when presumably motoring was still a bit of a novelty. Re: What comics did you buy today?
Yesterday I took delivery of 30 issues of The Boys' Friend, which were being sold on ebay with a very sparse description, and the photo showed the one on the top of the pile had an exploding German battleship on. I hoped they'd be from during World War 1, but instead are a varied selection from 1906 (in which there is a fictional story about a war against Germany) to 1927, most are from around 1918-19, and yes this includes the "victory issues" from November 1918... which don't mention it at all, the war didn't seem like such a game after 4 years of massacres.
I also got some issues of The Girl's Friend from 1919, these are in much better condition, and are bagged (the others are just a pile of barely-connected pages). The stories look to be a lot of "Bronte"-type romance, no motorbike-riding flappers just yet. Also among this lot was a surprise issue of "Big Comic", a halfpenny comedy comic from 1917, paper shortages have reduced it to a mere 4 pages, or one folded sheet!

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Today I become the proud owner of the 1968 Candy and Andy annual. Surely Candy wins the title for the weirdest comic of all time. Two panda-humans, some live actors, and eerie puppet children. It looks like something out of a Paul McCarthy video performance! Do other contributors think Candy is the strangest comic of all time?

I am currently awaiting delivery of the following:
Dogbreath 26
The Incredible Hulks 1
The Real Ghostbusters 1
