Thanks for that information, Steve. It bears out the point I was making in my last paragraph, because girls couldn't get the full set from just their own paper. So, as with Thomsons, there would have to have been some forceful but realistic bartering of duplicates to get a full set of 144 from a total of 288 across the three titles. Apart from those girls with well-heeled, or simply generous, parents, of course!
Today I got the latest Phoenix (Zara again! these stories are great) and also:
Hulton's Adventure Stories, from 1932 or 33. I have another one of these with the same title, but a different cover and stories. Would be nice if they were explicitly dated!
The Adventure Book for Boys. Published by Collins and appears to be from the late 50's or early 60's. I also have another one of these with the same title, but a different cover, and they're also undated!
Picked up the latest Torpedo book (Vol 4 by IDW) darkly and at times very funny scripts by Sanchez Abuli and excellent art throughout by Jordi Bernet, exactly what "grown up" comics should be, fun and mature and not a superhero in sight
I won one of those dvds of vintage comics from ebay. It is six 64 page black and white science fiction comics published by Tit-Bits magazine in the 1950s. The covers are full colour and the artwork is by Ron Turner.
Today on eBay, I won 12 copies of Nutty (in 4 separate auctions), totalling just under £7 with postage, from 1982/83. The next item I won (I apologise to anyone on here who may have been bidding on it) was a lot of 62 Beezer comics from the 1972,73,74,75 & 79, of which I ended up spending around £45 for with postage.
Visited the Little Shop of Heroes in Dumfermline today and I picked up a 1984 Topper Summer Special, 1985 Whoopee Holiday Special and January 1986 Best of Whizzer and Chips.
I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
I picked up a couple of Beanos from a charity shop in Manchester on Saturday - each from 1974 & 1975. I remember reading them many years ago. One of them has the debut strip of the underrated "Tom Dick & Sally".
As a bonus the shop put them in a big plastic bag for storage. Fortunately they had some more bags which they sold to me; that'll improve the preservation of the ones in my collection so far (not brought from 30th Century who always sell you the comic with the protective bag).
While in London at the weekend, I spent some time in the basement of 30th Century Comics, digging in their pocket library boxes and found some lovely Super Detective Libraries which filled gaps in my collection. Incl. 5 Lesley Shane adventures; a Blackshirt I'd been looking for; an issue of an obscure, (well, to me, anyway) Picture Library series, "Scotland Yard"; another obscure series, "Private Eye"; a text Silent Three issue and a Schoolgirls' Picture Library issue - The Silent Three Fight Back.
Upstairs again, The Phantom label on a box attracted me like a magnet. What a pile of Australian Frew Phantoms. Spent rather a lot and bought quite a pile incl. the Lee Falk tribute issue and 2 of the 300 page Annuals, 1999 and 2000. What a day. I could have lived there. If they provided pizza and coffee, I'd happily camp out in their basement.
A few days previously, I visited a couple of pals and one of them was getting boxes ready for the upcoming mart and I found British pocket libraries that he had for sale, and, he let me have my choice dirt cheap. They were all westerns, apart from one and I took a selection, incl. 2 x Pecos Bill; a Western Library; a Western Star; 3 x Cowboy Adventure Library; a Pocket Western Library; Totem#22; 2 x Silhouette Picture Stories; Lone Rider Picture Library#3. Most of these were Spanish or Italian reprints, I think. One oddity was a reprint of the Bonelli comic, "Tex Willer, translated from the Italian original. Something I never knew had been published in the U.K. The one non-western comic was a Miller b&w reprint in pocket book size, Marvel Tales #3.
Today was 74 issues of 'Plug' comic. A near complete run, so close yet so far. Just missing issue #51. Considering I have never once bought a single issue of it, not a bad way to start!
However, I really must stay away from eBay, it really is too tempting!
At the Collector Fair at Braehead, I bought 3 cowboy picture libraries - 1 Cowboy comics and 2 WDL picture Story Pocket Westerns.
Skipper # 527 as it had an episode of The Birdman of the RAF and Wizard # 614.
Plus, I was given the Buster Book 1966. Tha pages are loos but it's all there, and, it was free.
