Must admit that Karen would rip your arm off for a Commando but would kill you if you offered her a Bunty or a Romance Picture Library.Phoenix wrote:I suppose it depends on what you include. For example, Thomsons had a massive output of daily and weekly newspapers and magazines which they presumably saw as more important than their story papers, comics and annuals. Fleetway's priorities were almost certainly similar. I can start the ball rolling, Steve, with a list of the story papers that Thomsons were publishing in 1965. These were Rover and Wizard, the last of their text story papers, The Hotspur, The Victor and The Hornet of their picture story papers for boys, Romeo, Bunty, Judy, Diana and Jackie for girls, and Commando for bloodthirsty people of either gender. Then there were obviously the comics like The Dandy, The Beano, The Topper, The Beezer and Sparky. Perhaps others could add to the list, and/or do the same for Fleetway, and if anybody has accurate figures for the weekly or monthly published output of either one or both of the companies, perhaps they could post those. And if anyone can remember a serial featuring an atomic dagger (dirk), could they please direct us towards it.stevezodiac wrote:Who were the biggest publishers in 1965 - Fleetway or DC Thomson?

And yes, we have moved the posts to the moderators areas. If you wish to have robust discussions, take it to PM please.

I'm not sure what you mean by a trace but the shades as you call them would just be a dot screen effect of various percentages. It was used on most comics.Raven wrote:I meant tint in the sense of shade/variety of colour rather than in the sense of just a trace, as it was very prominent and, yes, very effective, making the pages look very vivid.Lew Stringer wrote: It wasn't a tint. They simply printed dark blue instead of black. Lots of 1950s annuals used that technique on some pages. With the addition of red spot colour it was very effective indeed.

If I might refer you back, Colin, to the Beano - new direction? thread, which was similarly moved into a moderator's private area, having been 'locked' first by that self-same moderator, you will perhaps recall that subsequently I clearly established that censorship had been used. As I felt that censorship and an open forum were incompatible, I asked for the entire thread to be restored. Common sense prevailed. So, in view of the fact that censorship has now acquired another head, hopefully not on its way to becoming another Hydra, I will ask you first to acknowledge that your action is further evidence of censorship on our open forum, and then to restore what you consider to be the offending section to that open forum. I won't object if you keep it separate from the original thread and simply lock it, but you surely must agree that it has to be returned. I won't bore you by repeating Al's wise words on this matter, but I must admit that I find it curious that you waited until the 'discussion' had actually finished before you stepped in.colcool007 wrote:we have moved the posts to the moderators areas. Moderation is essential on a forum to stop spammers, trolls and flame wars. Well done to the moderator. Theres way too much unpleasantness on the board these days. Feel free to moderate this comment out of existence. Back to comics please.

In which case wouldn't it have been better for a moderator to step in when the discussion was going on, rather than wait until it was all over and write it out of history?starscape wrote:Moderation is essential on a forum to stop spammers, trolls and flame wars. Well done to the moderator.
Anyway, the best way to stop trolls is not to allow them a platform to spin their tales in the first place.

Re: What The Papers Say
I fail to see what it achieves, after the thread had returned on topic, to remove an earlier section of it. It's like pretending it didn't happen. If it was grossly offensive or spam, fair enough, but it wasn't. That's not moderation. It's censorship.starscape wrote:Yes, I agree. But too late now. Re: What The Papers Say
This is a private forum with explicit rules. Everyone agrees to abide by those rules upon joining. I do not see that removing posts which contravene those rules as censorship, in a pejorative sense, anymore than deleting spam or hate speech would be.
If I had a forum of my own, I'd just have the one rule: rule 1. I make the rules. Rule 2. All rules are subject to change without notice.

My four-year-old grandson does that all the time. It's the very devil keeping up with him. He'll grow out of though, as he matures.Marionette wrote:If I had a forum of my own, I'd just have the one rule: rule 1. I make the rules. Rule 2. All rules are subject to change without notice.
Re: What The Papers Say
I'm more than happy to see flame war correspondence wiped out. Someone provokes and then when it flares up everyone starts quoting chapter and verse as if it's necessary to set the record straight. No need to as there is a high level of intelligence here and we can see what's going on. And yes we can all see the little jab in one of the posts above. Not too clever really.
I'm grateful to Al for setting up this forum and to the moderators who have the unenviable task of having to deal with difficult situations (and people). I don't post much but I've been here all the time (Visitor No.3 no less!) and seen it all. Carry on the good job.

I'd never want to be that mature. It sounds frightfully dull.Phoenix wrote:My four-year-old grandson does that all the time. It's the very devil keeping up with him. But this is all getting off topic again. If anyone has anything interesting to add I'd suggest making a separate topic elsewhere, in the non-comics discussion.
Anyone interested in the Golden Age Wonder Woman newspaper strip? It was a hoot, and never reprinted as far as I am aware.

I am a watcher, really, but I can't stop wondering why this Member is trying so hard to make more enemies on this Forum!? Why doesn't he read the title of the thread and use the PM option offered by the system?

Ah, with a creator who was so into bondage and his background of the inventor of the lie detector meant that he invented WWs lasso of truth....
...except...
it only became the lasso of truth much later. Before, it was a magic rope that was occasionally used to command someone to speak the truth in amongst other magical bits'n'pieces. Always print the legend.
And Ive no idea why he is so grumpy lately but just Add Foe in the profile and it hides the posts. If you wont speak to someone in the pub, dont bother with their rants online. Life's too short.
