Sales figures July-Dec 2013

Post by Digifiend »

http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/uk-magazi ... 503-titles
  • Dennis & Gnasher Megazine 20,502 -13.4% (I'm glad to see it's listed under the correct name and not as BeanoMAX, but the fact it's dropped readers isn't good news).
  • Doctor Who Adventures Magazine 28,443 -10.9%
  • Doctor Who Magazine 36,151 25.8% (I guess DW is proving more popular with adults than kids right now)
  • Jacqueline Wilson 46,848 1.0% (That's one piece of good news for DC Thomson among all the bad)
  • Mega 30,768 N/A (impressive for a new launch, it almost beat The Beano and The Simpsons)
  • Simpsons Comics Presents 19,628 -28.8% (Calamitous drop, maybe this explains the recent revamp as Bart & Co)
  • The Simpsons Comics 32,073 -36.8% (more bad news for Titan)
  • The Beano 32,028 -11.2% (not good news at all)
  • Toxic 53,022 12.8% (Great news for Egmont)
  • WWE Kids 29,129 -4.9% (more bad news for DCT)

I've covered some points about this on my blog today, including the fact that The Beano is the only one on the list with a weekly frequency. So shifting 32,000 copies a week is still pretty good.

Aye, The Beano has to be applauded for keeping it's head above water whilst printing original stories featuring home-grown characters on nearly every page...EVERY WEEK! And long may it continue.

This idiosyncratic, tightly edited and fun blast of Britishness is still the best comic* you can buy for your wee bairns. The other titles** listed here are just press releases, picture swipes, old jokes and lazy Google searches - basically the paper version of an average Facebook wall, and about as intellectually nourishing and coherent.

* The Phoenix may be a contender - but it's practically impossible to get a copy Oop North.
** I've never read a copy of Jacqueline Wilson, so it may be an exception.

Simpsons Comics is more enjoyable than The Beano, Mike - and I don't even like the latest issues! :)

I've posted an article on this myself - responses to the sales figures from the main companies are in the "Comments" following the article. http://downthetubes.net/?p=14099

Overall, despite the downward trend affecting all print sectors, there's some good news - MEGA, as was pointed out for example.
