Here, for no particular reason, is a list of every British fanzine I know of. The list is in no particular order (I don't have time to order it!) and includes information such as run dates, no. of issues etc.

Has anybody got any titles they can add? Or any comments about fanzines in general?

I've also included booklets for various U.K. comics conventions. I'm sure there were some in-between the ones I've included but as I can't actually prove it I've left them off the list.

Note: This list doesn't include stripzines, letterzines or adzines.

A great list, George! It'd be good to have fanzines catalogued as many of them were so obscure. Some contained early work by many who went on to be professionals so it'd be of interest to collectors.

Just a few amendments that spring to mind:

I did only 2 issues of Metamorph, then changed it to Fantasy Express for 3 issues. Page count varied every issue.

I did 6 issues of Zeal but this was part of the BAPA mailing. Basically, an APA (Amateur Press Association) involved each member producing their own fanzine (varying from one A4 sheet to multiple pages) and then sending their zines to the central mailer. He or she would then collate them and send a package out to each member. So if the APA had 20 members you'd receive 20 different fanzines. (I think BAPA stood for British Amateur Press Association.)

The After Image Supplimental was only one issue I think, and mainly a sales list of comics I no longer wanted.

I'm not sure Denis Gifford's Ally Sloper should be on the list because it was a professional comic available from WH Smith etc.

That is an excellent list. Thank you George. You list aka by McShane and for clarity, I'd like to add that I was involved as editor as well as contributor on some issues, and in later issues, Andy Dougan did most of the work. In fact, the publisher info. changed from McShane to AKA Books and Comics at some point but I can't remember when.

I would agree. I should also point out that Crikey! was also a (more or less) professional production, and had high street distribution for part of its run (until Borders collapsed and took our distribution with it).

I did 6 issues of Zeal but this was part of the BAPA mailing. Basically, an APA (Amateur Press Association) involved each member producing their own fanzine (varying from one A4 sheet to multiple pages) and then sending their zines to the central mailer. He or she would then collate them and send a package out to each member. So if the APA had 20 members you'd receive 20 different fanzines. (I think BAPA stood for British Amateur Press Association.)

Another Apazine was Rainbow Bridge, which I contributed to in the 90s. Another regular contributor was Andy Oliver, who for the last few years has been managing editor of Broken Frontier.com.

I should also point out that Crikey! was also a (more or less) professional production, and had high street distribution for part of its run (until Borders collapsed and took our distribution with it).

Mind you, it does also have Comics International in there, so it's fanzines plus. Maybe better to catalogue than just fanzines.

Firstly that's an amazing list well done in collating that - it brought back some memories.

I could help with some titles of fanzines from the 60s - early 80s but not sure I could give you dates and numbers (I have a batch of fanzines in my loft I can look that out also as they all advertised other fanzines). Also there were so many stripzines (and fanzines) around the mid 70s with really low print runs (my own very forgotten 40 print run "Outpost" died a death as I printed it up but had no idea how to get it out there - ended up posting it out free to the first 40 addresses in UK Marvel) I think it would be hard to get them all - but some names you may not have (sorry I may have duplicated some form your list, you had so many) :

Infinity and Masters Of Infinity were definitely different fanzines.

Infinity was an A5 zine, which was revived a few years back as a digital fanzine (see http://russell-willis-blogs.blogspot.co.uk/)

MOI was A4 sized -- type Masters Of Infinity fanzine into Google and you'll get a whole bunch of results

You can also download lots of Ed Pinsent comics from there including Primitif and Illegal Batman, which are essential reads as far as I'm concerned

Near Myths was a pro comic, or at least semi-pro. If you include that you've then got to include all the UK underground comics, all Knockabout publications etc. Then as Knockabout became slicker, you've then got to include all their books, and in fairness all other UK graphic novels by other publishers.

While it's nice to see stripzines listed, it might make the project unmanageable to include them as well because numerous new titles are coming out all the time (though now called small press comics).
