Addie and Hermy in the Dandy

Also been trying to find out in which Dandy issue that Addie and Hermie first appeared. I have no107 from 1939, and I think it was that one, but I'm not sure. Anyone know?

According to Kashgar (one of our resident gurus and compiler of the Dandy Monster Index) Addy and Hermy (the Nasty Nazis) ran from Dandy #107 (16/12/39) to #169 (22/2/41). Funnily enough I picked up a lovely old cartoon by the strip's artist Sam Fair just this afternoon.

I wonder if DC Thomson brought the series to an end in 1941 because Addy and Hermy's real-life namesakes just didn't seem so funny any more?

Good question.

Of course The Beano had it's own Axis lampooning strip, Musso the Wop. He ran from issue 107 (what a coincidence!) dated 28/12/1940, to issue 203, dated 10/4/1943. In July 1943, Mussolini was deposed, so presumably they saw that coming hence why it ended when it did. It was also by Sam Fair.

Maybe Addie and Hermy simply fell foul of a pagination reduction?

Another interesting representation of the enemy from the same period was, of course, the German spy Funf who regularly plagued Tommy Handley in his Radio Fun strip.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that Hitler put the creators of this specific strip, as opposed to Musso The Wop, on a Nazi hitlist.

Hitler put the entire staff of The Dandy and The Beano on that hitlist! It wasn't specific to that strip. Did Lord Snooty and Desperate Dan suddenly stop fighting Nasties at that time? I doubt it. Probably a year or two later when they decided to go for escapism over patriotism.

I have been reading through the GILES AT WAR book this weekend, and it's great stuff, although one or two of the items are [deliberately] macabre.

Contains brilliant caricatures of Benito M, Himmler and Goering and others.

[funny, the caricatures of the baddies are always more entertaining than the likes of Churchill and Roosevelt].

In a similar vein I couldn't resist this 1939 song-sheet I picked up from a local charity shop a couple of weeks ago. Composer Annette Mills is said to be famous for having written the hit song 'Boomps-a-Daisy', though of course she later became even better known as the co-star of TV's Muffin the Mule.



I particularly like the words of the chorus:

• ADOLF - you've bitten off more than you can chew
  Come on hold your hand out we're all fed up with you (Cor blimey!)
  ADOLF - you toddle off and all your Nazis too
  Or you may get something to remind you of the good old Red White and Blue!

(Sadly the cartoonist isn't named - though I wouldn't be surprised if this was Sam Fair as well)

That's a great picture, I've got a few WW2 music sheets myself, I'm going to keep a look out for one of these as well now.

I thought I posted in this thread, but it looks like it didn't take. Just to say that judging from the examples in the "Legend of Lord Snooty" book, Snooty and his pals fight Hitler (in person) throughout 1940, and after 1940 those strips cease. I favour Phil's theory that Hitler and Goering just didn't seem so funny anymore, even when getting beaten up.

Sorry Hawkeye - I'm afraid that issue seems to have scuttled off to hide under the furniture so it can jump out and shout 'boo!' at me when I least expect it (some of my comics do that! ). For what it's worth I DID manage to find #76 and, while I could be wrong, I seem to recall that the editor introduced Lord Haw-Haw to Radio Fun readers as a new strip in the previous issue.

And, other than Addy and Hermy, Nosey Parker, Lord Haw-Haw and Strang the Terrible what other characters are on your collecting first appearances hit list?

I've been collecting for about 20 years or so. I started exclusively with Beano and Dandy, then Broons and Wullie.
I have a load of Tiger Tim, all the annuals from 1922, all the first series of Tiger Tims Tales, first issues of Tiger TIms Weely and Playbox, and lots of other odds and ends TT related.
Its just in the last year or 2 that I've become interested in the big 5.
On my 'hit list' to get are Morgyn the Mighty, Sexton Blake, Nero and Zero, Dick Barton, Braddock, Ally Sloper to name but a few. I know which issues they are in, but just can't find them for sale at present.
