What comics did you buy today?
Re: What comics did you buy today?
quote="philcom55"]Not THAT new however, as the story originally appeared in Epic Illustrated over 30 years ago. In my opinion John Bolton's art was at its peak then, following on from his runs on full-colour strips like the Bionic Woman in Britain's Look-In during the late 1970s.[/quote]
Yes, this is referred to at the beginning of the book along with some concept art.Originally in black and white and then as now in colour. The thing with great art as you must know is that it transcends time.

Several copies of Bimbo from 1964, found in Newcastle, New South Wales. What grabbed me was "Tom Thumb" by Dudley Watkins, which is a painted strip, unlike most of his work. Apart from that, Bimbo is an education in the art of telling stories without words.
Re: What comics did you buy today?
I think Bimbo tends to be rather unfairly overlooked when compared to Fleetway's nursery comics Playhour and Jack & Jill. I wish I could identify more of the artists who worked for it beyond Watkins, Bill Ritchie, Bob Dewar and Douglas Turnbull.

In Bimbo, I'm sure "Pussy Willow" is by the artist who was drawing "Little Plum" around 1969, although I don't know the name. And "Little Snow White" looks a bit like Bernie Krigstein! I'll post some images shortly.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
slim pickings at present: Marvel UK Super-Heroes #26 (6 more to obtain for a full set). Disney's Fun Time #20 (15 more required from a full set of 21, although I do have the first three with free gifts). So, while my expenditure on comics has somewhat declined in the last couple of months, my current ISA is laughing. Still, I shall endeavour with overtime: you never know when that next "big one" is coming.
Re: What comics did you buy today?
Bought two comics today from a charity shop(or are they comics?)(what is...a comic ?12/9/15 )and then again what are the odds of you yourself being born on this planet a billion to one? A trillion to one?Are there multi universes where you exist? Can you believe the perceptions of reality as portrayed by upside down images on the retina of the eye?

That one's always bothered me. And how do I know that what I perceive as "red" (for example) is the same as what everyone else does??abacus wrote:Can you believe the perceptions of reality as portrayed by upside down images on the retina of the eye?
Blah, today the postman brought me Octobriana: The Underground History, all about that public domain character from the USSR. Looks very nice on an initial flick-through, got some new stuff in there by Hunt Emerson, Gabby Noble, Lew Stringer, Vincent Danks and Neil Edwards too.

You could always experiment by taking a piece of card that you think is red down to Lime Street station tomorrow morning, and ask as many members of the travelling public as you consider necessary for proof positive to tell you what colour the card is. You will of course need to ask any that say it is green if they are colour blind. For what it's worth, my prediction is that all bar the colour blind will say it's red. You should be able to go home after an hour. I'd suggest Jim's Emporium as an alternative but I don't think he opens on Saturdays any more.TwoHeadedBoy wrote:And how do I know that what I perceive as "red" (for example) is the same as what everyone else does??
Re: What comics did you buy today?
...I'm afraid that wouldn't work Phoenix. You'd still have no way of proving that other people hadn't always perceived red as blue and blue as red (or sky-blue pink for that matter), even though they agreed with you that the card was 'red'.
Re: What comics did you buy today?
I take your point, Phil. However, as far as daily life is concerned there is near total agreement that what people perceive as red is red. Perhaps psychologists, philosophers, and research scientists in appropriate disciplines should be the people to try to answer THB's question. I've also noticed that a significant amount of alcohol consumption can affect people's perceptions. For example, at such times I see Bolton Wanderers as potential European Cup winners, and Andy Capp thinks Florrie is beautiful.

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Not long back from a weekend working in Blackpool, up early on Sunday due to an uncomfortable bed so took advantage of the situation and went to some car boot sales. Glad I did! Less than £10 got me:
-Six Giles books
-The 1995 Broons book
-Oor Wullie books from 1994 and 2001 (missing its first page - not moaning at 10p though)
-Eagle Annual 1986
-Starship Troopers - "The Official Comic", issue 1
-Where's Wally? The Solid Gold Collection (the first five books in a shiny slipcase)
-A Dennis the Menace cushion
-A Pog tournament board
Worth getting up for
When I got home tonight, found a package from the postman, a nice little cheap bundle off eBay containing one issue each of Escape, Deadline, Zit and Funny Half Hour. Only ever had later issues of Escape up until now, now I find that issue 3 (and supposedly all the earlier issues) is in A5 format. Live and learn, eh?

Re: What comics did you buy today?
Actually, it is only in the shades that those that are colour blind have trouble with perception. After all a red letterbox is still red to those who are colour blind. But you will find that it is only in the pastels that colour blind people have issues. And it is not just limited to reds and greens. There are many different variations of colour perception which is dependent on the formation of the cones in your eyes.Phoenix wrote:You could always experiment by taking a piece of card that you think is red down to Lime Street station tomorrow morning, and ask as many members of the travelling public as you consider necessary for proof positive to tell you what colour the card is. I started to say something sensible but my parents took over my brain!
Re: What comics did you buy today?
For the third time, I failed to buy Roy of the Rovers no.3 with free gift from Phil's Auctions. It went for around £33 and £37 previously. This time, I bid £37.50 and went for a pint and, on return, found that it had sold for £62 - a mighty jump! I'm not too disheartened. I was always outbid on the first two issues with free gifts with Phil's Auctions and yet managed to buy them a lot more cheaply with other sellers. I guarantee, some day, I shall win a bid on issue 3 with free gift far less than £62. I have patience

Yellow is a problem for me as an artist; it's always shifting towards orange or (far worse) lime green when it gets printed. I think you'd find a lot of disagreement over yellow at Lime Street, particularly in shadows or under fluoro lights.
Bagged ten issues of Lion 1966-68 and a 1979 Misty at the Bendigo comics fair on Sunday. These were about the only British comics for sale. That's typical in Australia, you find a chunk of boy's adventure, and the odd issue of a girls' comic, but hardly ever a Beano.
