Dr Who cartoonist John Canning; is he alive?.

Hi there,
was wondering if any o yous good people knew any more information about John Canning, best remembered if at al these days as the TV Comic artist for Dr Who 1966-71 and 75-78. I've always loved his expressive fully-painted style.

I don't know if he's still alive but as he was born in 1923 he'd be well into his eighties by now. He worked for most of the major publishers including DC Thomson and IPC, but apart from TV Comic (where he also drew strips such as Star Trek, Charlie's Angels, Cannon, Laurel & Hardy, Dukes of Hazard, Top Cat and Captain Caveman) the other series he's probably best remembered for is 'The Ladybird Adventure Club' in Swift; this was based on the now-defunct children's clothing firm for whom he also produced fashion catalogues. As a matter of interest, as well as drawing some of the earlier incarnations of Dr Who in TV Comic he also went on to redraw Tom Baker's face on Gerry Haylock's artwork when some of his strips were later recycled!
