Just been rereading Giles again after Nigel mentioned it on his blog..and just bought the 2011 one which has some new stuff..

What I like about Giles he seemed to get the right balance about showing news topics But still not too heavy in a putting you off way...gentle But also strong..
I find Mac for example good But his points can be very dark..
Giles using the family in his cartoon brought the warmth to it..also being not too heavy on the news story you don't need writing underneath to understand the gag..

I'm also amazed at how much he drew and the details..they can be real laugh out loud moments..
As Leo Baxendale has said..Giles influanced him..and many of us..

I have all the Giles books from the early sixties to the mid 1970s or thereabouts that I really should dig out and look at again sometime. Excellent work.

I don't really follow Mac's cartoons but I'm pleased to see him still working as I enjoyed the pages he drew for Smash! etc.

When Bill Ritchie wrote to me many years back he mentioned Giles as an influence and drew my attention to the way he drew Baby Crockett's gran very much like the gran in Giles's cartoons.

Most topical cartoons get one look; with Giles it would be one look for the gag, at least one more to get the background details, then another look just to glory in how good the drawing is.

what a great database..this will keep you busy..

of course nothing will replace the book..But what you see on here will make your mind boggle..sooo much amazing work.I love his Christmas card and the way Giles draws snow.see also my new blog post..

this was before the internet and you needed books and photos..and lots of sketches..
