2000AD - Prog 2000

Well from all accounts it was never meant to have happened, but 2000AD has finally hit its 2000th prog.

I loved the issue with tributes from the old guard. Then there was the Dredd/Alpha team up by their creators. Also was nice seeing a Nemesis story by the O'Neill art droid.

I think Mc Mahon done stuff for the 2000th edition too---if so, great to see so much of the old guard. [silly me---just checked, details are all on the above cover!]

No, there's no way I would have placed a bet on the comic reaching this number either--this is the equivalent of BEANO reaching the same number in 1980---a remarkable achievement especially taking into account the dwindling numbers of todays' comics sales.

Most readers expected '3OOO AD' Phil: the last result anyone expected was to just keep the same moniker.

Can't see a scan of it on the web but there was an advert for 3000AD in a back page of one of the early comics. IIRC MACH 10 was on the cover (with four arms).

They also gave away a one-off issue of 3000AD several years ago in order to gain copyright on the title.

That was good business planning on their behalf, Lew; in a similar vein [copyright] some joker beat a major film studio to the punch and hoped to sell the name;

to the original company after buying the rights to it in 1999 ; ---FOX, probably quite rightly, refuse to pay out a huge sum to this imaginitive, far-seeing charlatan, which explains why all their new films are still put out under the old, out-of-date-technically

I am not sure about a Brian Bolland cover but there is a Cliff Robinson variant which I bought from 2000ADOnLine.com

Sid: I think Bolland drew a page of frames inside [yes he is mostly a covers artist now of course] but I am just going by what I have read online, I still haven't actually seen the prog as yet.

There are three cover variants by Cliff Robinson, Glenn Fabry and Chris Burham.

My review is here on Down The Tubes and there is indeed a page by Bolland and McMahon, Gibbons, Smith (Robin not Ron), McNeill and Cook have all done a page as well. Counterfeit Girl looks to be an instant classic but for me head and shoulders above everything else is the Anderson one off by David Roach. It is just so damn beautiful.

Great review, colcool. I must admit I felt a shiver when I read the Gibbons, Bolland pages.

Talking about Prog 2000, I just saw this in eBay:

£19.99 for the Cliff Robinson cover version. I will feel sorry for anyone buying it before checking 2000ADOnline where they can get it for £3.99. Admittedly, P&P is extra.

I remember seeing something similar happening with the last ever printed Dandy where people where charging a fortune for the comic on eBay even though it was available at the normal cover price from DCT's website.
